Bash and apache fun (not profit)

Posted in software by sandro on the October 31st, 2007

So who’s watching your site? Military spooks?

tail -n 3000 access_log | awk '{print $2}' |sort | uniq | while read line; do echo $line `host $line|awk '{print $5}'`; done

And what about referrers?

tail -n 30000 access_log | awk '{print $12}'|sort | uniq -c | sort -nr | less

You’ll probably have to change these depending on your apache log file since mine is a bit custom ;-)

Got any more similar apache + bash tips?

VirtualBox - yet another virtual machine software?

Posted in software by sandro on the October 23rd, 2007

virtualbox

Yep! But this one has a few advantages:

  • Opensource. I know there is qemu (which is pretty cool) etc .. but this one feels more professional
  • Modularity - ability to control from command line, or GUI or remotely. They have an SDK which allows youto write new interfaces.
  • Runs of Windows and Linux
  • Support for OS X Hosts (beta + for Intel only)
  • Closed source version of VirtualBox can act as an RDP server - which is pretty cool IMHO. They also have USB over RDP support.

Posted in the net by sandro on the October 21st, 2007

It’s Sunday, and I just finished watching “Endgame”, which is a series of documentaries presented by the program “Frontline” on PBS. Talks about the war on Iraq, change in strategy, issues and the people tackling these issues. You can watch these documentaries online. There’s also “Frontline World”, which tackles issues outside the states: available online.

Picked a few documentaries that might interest you:

Raise funds with fundable.com

Posted in the net by sandro on the October 20th, 2007

I never was a big fan of raising funds really. But this site is quite interesting. If you have a reason to expect people to help you raise funding, then start a collection. If the goal isn’t met within a period of time, then no one pays anything.

A different perspective:

Guess it’s easy to scam people as well this way. For example, check this one and this. They could very well be faked. Wonder how long it will be before we see 419 scams starting to use this kind of thing.

See your real life as you see your avatar

Avatar Machine /

The virtual communities created by online games have provided us with a new medium for social interaction and communication. Avatar Machine is a system which replicates the aesthetics and visuals of third person gaming, allowing the user to view themselves as a virtual character in real space via a head mounted interface. The system potentially allows for a diminished sense of social responsibility, and could lead the user to demonstrate behaviors normally reserved for the gaming environment.
