hostgator changes passwords as a good measure
This site is hosted with a provider called HostGator. This morning I got an email from them that was caught as spam since it looked like a phishing email, asking me to change my password. However it looks very legitimate . Take a look at the forum post to see why they are changing everyone’s passwords. There’s a hell lot of reasons .. so next thing, I’m changing this password.
Google Adsense
If you’re a frequent Geekbazaar visitor, you’ll notice that there are some extra Google related things - an icon to Google’s Firefox plugin and a Google Adsense advert in one particular article. I just put these there ad hoc to see if it makes any difference (and money), especially because of the increase in traffic since posting the CNN Orgasm video.
Sex sells.
Meanwhile I’ll try to find time to play around with the location of these new entities, make it more effective and less intrusive. Maybe get a simple logo or design update as well. Just maybe …
Wordpress bookmarklet
On the write page at the bottom you’ll find a bookmarklet for Geekbazaar /Wordpress. Use it. For simplicity’s sake .. here’s the book marklet.
Simply drag that to your bookmarks toolbar ![]()
geekbazaar…google search
If you search geekbazaar on google, this blog is the first entry…erm..good news Sandro no?
Sticky: Geek Test got updated
The Geek Quiz just got updated to version 0.3, to include even more questions. New subjects include funky mathematics and some retro geeky film trivia - a bit of electronics and some low level fun. The number of questions is now 20 .. while the passing score is 12
You’re more than welcome to post new questions to be included in next version, in the comments below ![]()
giving meebo chatroom a try
You might blink your eyes once or twice, and notice that a flash thingie is included in the sidebar on the right.
Don’t know if it makes sense to make use of this .. but giving it a try. If it turns out to be totally useless and no one is using it, then it will get removed.
Beta testing yet another geek test
Thought you guys && gals would like to try out the brand new spanking “Yet Another Geek Test”.. here.
We do need more questions (and answers) and feedback, so kindly leave a comment.
sticky: yet another geek test
Since there’s an infinite number of geek tests out there.. why not add yet another one? One that we know for sure that we’ll get 100% .. or at least a very good mark to brag about. What do you guys think? Post questions and possible answers in the comments box, then press the button.
Some sample questions:
- What resolution is real life?
- How would you recognize a file type?
- What operating systems do you run?
- Why would you run a killall on a SunOS?
- What makes Bruce Schneier kinky?
- Which is your favorite MIME header?
- How did Stanley crack the password in Swordfish?
- When did you last run a virus?
speed
The site had complaints that it was slow - and as an act of self-improvement decided to do something about it. We identified at least one issue - coolplayer (the thing that displays the youtube and flash animations), was making use of an rpc server on the author’s chinese website. That slows down the whole page loading process - so we shifted that code to geekbazaar. Now it’s all local - so should be a hell lot faster. If the page is still slow - we can make the number of articles on the main page something like 10 (the default anyway).
word press ‘n stuff
Updates:
- anyone can register now
- By default new users have “subscriber” privileges
- if you need your privileges upgraded just let me know
- if you need to post a new article which has an embedded youtube video just put the link between [coolplayer] tags. Example:
[xcoolplayer]
http://url/
[/xcoolplayer] - enjoy
Post new article
Anyone contributing will be pleased to know that there’s now a quick and easy way to post a new article.
This is called the “Post new article” button.
How to post new articles:
- click on the control button on the keyboard
- while keeping the control button pressed, search for the “F” key on your keyboard and press it as well
- A popup box should come up
- Type “post new article” in the popup box
- Press the “enter button”. Kindly note that this button might not have the word “enter” on it. Some weird keyboards have this non-ergonomic arrow to symbolize “enter” for some reason or another
- By now you should have quit reading this useless article and posted a new one.
Enjoy ![]()
meeting people is easy
This is an era where everyone’s a journalist and almost no one’s a professional. It is finally an age where everyone can have his few seconds of fame and then it’s all gone.
Welcome to our few seconds of fame.
Here you’ll find stuff that we usually email each other:
- seemingly clever things like roomba and wiimote hacks
- SecondLife curiosities
- shirts with a strong sense of character
- ideas for things that can only be sold somewhere in japan
- tips on software like Omnioutliner, that will actually improve your life
- things that are faster than anything we’ll ever afford
- stuff that answers questions like “what kind of dining set defines me as a person?“
